How typing speed is measured
This tool uses the common convention of five characters per word. Gross words per minute is the number of characters typed divided by five, then divided by the elapsed minutes. Net words per minute subtracts uncorrected errors per minute. Accuracy is the share of typed characters that match the passage at the same position.
You can practise with common words, sentences, punctuation and numbers, or add your own text. The timer measures elapsed time from your device clock, so it remains accurate even if the display updates a little late. You can end a practice test early when you want to inspect a score before time runs out.
Use results as practice feedback
Typing speed depends on the keyboard, layout, posture, text difficulty and familiarity with the language. Phone autocorrect and predictive text can distort a score, so a physical keyboard gives a more useful comparison. The recent-results list stays in your browser on this device; it is not sent to the site.
Different exams and employers use different scoring rules. Some tests count key depressions per hour, require a specific language layout, ignore corrected errors or use a fixed passage. This tool does not claim to reproduce SSC, government, school or workplace exam results. Use the official instructions when preparing for a particular test.
The supplied passages are English only. Other languages and keyboard layouts need different handling and scoring conventions, so they are not included here.
Limitations
- English passages only in this version.
- WPM uses five characters per word; exam rules can differ.
- Autocorrect and predictive text can distort results on phones.
- Results are practice feedback, not a certificate.

No. The recent-tests list is stored only in this browser when storage is available.
Can I paste the passage?
No. Pasting is disabled in the typing box so the score reflects typed input.
