Pixels lighter than this become transparent. Lower it to remove shadows and paper texture; raise it if faint strokes disappear.

How to use Image Signature Maker
-
Step 1: Draw or upload
Sign in the box with a mouse, finger or stylus, or upload a photo or scan of your signature on plain paper.
-
Step 2: Adjust it
Pick the pen colour and thickness, or move the threshold until only the ink is left on the checkered preview.
-
Step 3: Download
Set the padding and size, then download a transparent PNG, or an SVG of a drawn signature.
How the signature maker works
Draw uses the open-source signature_pad library. Each stroke is stored as points with timestamps and drawn as smooth curves through them. Like a real pen, the line gets thinner when you move faster. With a stylus that reports pressure, pressing harder also makes the line wider. Because the strokes are kept as points rather than pixels, the tool can redraw them sharply at 2× or 3× size, after the window is resized, and as an SVG file.
Upload turns the paper transparent. Every pixel gets a brightness from 0 (black) to 255 (white):
- pixels at or above the threshold become fully transparent;
- pixels clearly darker than the threshold stay solid;
- pixels in between fade out, so the edges of the strokes stay smooth instead of jagged.
The automatic setting uses Otsu's method, which picks the brightness that best separates the pixels into two groups, ink and paper. Keep original keeps the colour of your pen; Black and Blue replace it with one solid colour. Remove small specks clears isolated dots of dust or paper grain.
In both modes the download is trimmed to the signature plus the padding you choose (at 2× and 3× the padding grows with the drawing).
For example, a 4,000 × 3,000 pixel phone photo is processed at 3,000 × 2,250 pixels. If the signature covers 1,200 × 400 pixels of it, the PNG with 10 px padding is 1,220 × 420 pixels.
Getting a clean photo or scan
- Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen. A gel or felt-tip pen gives stronger lines than a ballpoint; pencil is often too faint.
- Take the photo in daylight or even light, holding the phone flat above the page so no shadow falls on it.
- Fill most of the picture with the signature; keep the paper’s edge and the table out of view.
- A flatbed scan gives the cleanest result.
- If shadows or paper texture remain, lower the threshold. If thin strokes break up, raise it.
Using your signature image
- PDFs and forms: use your PDF editor's option to add an image or a signature, place it on the signature line and save. The transparent background lets the lines of the form show through.
- Word and Google Docs: insert the PNG as a picture and set it in front of the text so you can move it onto the signature line.
- Email signatures: most email programs let you add an image to your signature. Resize it to a modest width first.
A signature image is not a digital signature
A drawn or scanned signature is just a picture. It carries no certificate, does not prove who added it to a document and does not show whether the document was changed afterwards. Anyone with the file can copy it, so keep it to yourself.
In India, the Information Technology Act, 2000 recognises digital signatures backed by a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) from a licensed Certifying Authority, and electronic signatures such as Aadhaar eSign. A pasted image is neither. Many people accept a signature image on everyday letters and forms, but where a digital signature is required, only a certificate-based one will do. Company filings on the MCA21 portal, for example, must be signed with a DSC. If in doubt, ask the recipient what they accept.
Privacy
Your drawing and photos are processed by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or stored, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
Limitations
- Upload works best with dark ink on plain, light paper. Ruled lines, stamps, printed text or patterns near the signature may be kept as ink.
- One threshold is used for the whole image, so a shadow across part of the page can leave a grey patch. If lowering the threshold does not remove it, retake the photo in even light.
- Uploaded signatures are saved at the resolution of the photo (up to 3,000 pixels on the long side). The 2× and 3× sizes and SVG output are only available for drawn signatures.
- At 1× a drawing has the pixel size it has on your screen, so signatures drawn on a phone are small. Choose 2× or 3× for printing.
- Line width changes with pressure only when your stylus and browser report pen pressure. Mouse and finger strokes change width with speed only.
- HEIC photos are not supported. On an iPhone, choose Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible to take JPG photos.
- Your drawing is not saved. Refreshing or closing the page clears it.
Frequently asked questions
Is a signature image legally valid?
It depends on the document and on who receives it. Many people accept a signature image on everyday letters and forms, but it is not a digital signature: it has no certificate and cannot prove who added it. In India, where a law or a portal requires a digital signature, you need the kind it accepts, such as a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) from a licensed Certifying Authority or Aadhaar eSign.
Is my signature uploaded or stored anywhere?
No. Drawing and background removal happen in your browser, and the image is saved straight to your device. Nothing is sent to our server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
How do I add the signature to a PDF?
Download the PNG, then use your PDF editor’s option to add an image or a signature. Place it on the signature line, resize it and save the PDF. Because the background is transparent, the lines and text underneath stay visible.
Why does part of my photo stay grey or spotty?
That part of the paper is darker than the threshold, usually because of a shadow or uneven light. Lower the threshold until it disappears. If the signature starts to break up before that happens, retake the photo in daylight with the phone held flat above the page.
What do the 1×, 2× and 3× sizes do?
1× saves the drawing at its size on your screen in pixels. 2× and 3× redraw the same strokes at two or three times that size, so the signature stays sharp when printed or placed in a PDF. The SVG file can be scaled to any size.
Can I use a stylus with pressure sensitivity?
Yes. With a stylus that reports pressure, such as an Apple Pencil or a Windows pen in a browser that supports it, pressing harder makes the line wider. With a mouse or a finger, the line width changes with drawing speed instead.
