How the PDF merger works
When you add a file, the tool reads it in your browser to count its pages and to check that it can be opened. When you press “Merge PDFs”, it creates a new PDF and copies every page of every file into it, in the order of the list. The copying is done by pdf-lib, a JavaScript PDF library, usually in a background thread of your browser, so the page stays responsive while large files are merged.
The pages are copied as they are. Nothing is converted to images or drawn again, so text stays sharp and searchable, and the merged file is usually about as large as the files you added put together.
What is kept and what is not
Kept in the merged PDF:
- Page content: text, images, vector graphics and fonts.
- Page size and orientation, including rotated pages. Files with different page sizes can be merged; every page keeps its own size.
- Links and comments on the pages. A link that jumps to another page of the same file still works after merging.
Not kept:
- Bookmarks (the outline panel in PDF readers) and the document title of the original files.
- Fillable form fields may stop being editable. Text that was already filled in usually stays visible.
- Digital signatures. A signature only covers the file that was signed, so it is not valid in a merged copy.
Password-protected PDFs
A PDF that asks for a password when you open it has to be unlocked first. Open it with the password in a PDF app, save a copy without the password, and add that copy. Some PDFs open without a password but carry an owner password that restricts editing or printing. This tool does not remove such restrictions, so those files are refused with an explanation. PDFs that are encrypted but allow everything are merged normally.
Privacy
Your files are processed by JavaScript on your own device. They are not uploaded to a server, so you can use the tool for private documents such as bank statements or ID proofs. Nothing is stored after you close the page.
Limitations
- Bookmarks, the document title and other document-wide settings of the original files are not copied.
- Fillable form fields may no longer be editable, and digital signatures are not valid in the merged file.
- PDFs that need a password, and PDFs with owner restrictions, must be unlocked before they can be merged.
- All the work happens in your browser's memory. Very large jobs (several hundred megabytes in total) can fail on phones; use a computer for those.
- Damaged files may not open. If a file opens in your PDF reader but not here, save a new copy from the reader and add that instead.
Frequently asked questions
Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?
No. The files are read and merged by your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to our server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
How do I change the order of the files?
Drag a file up or down by the handle on its left, or use the up and down arrow buttons. The pages are merged from the top of the list to the bottom, and the pages inside each file keep their original order.
Does merging reduce the quality of my PDFs?
No. The pages are copied into the new file as they are, without being converted to images, so text and pictures look exactly as before.
Why is one of my PDFs refused?
The message tells you why. The most common reasons are a password that is needed to open the file, owner restrictions on editing or printing, or a damaged file. Unlock the file, or save a new copy from your PDF reader, and add it again.
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
Up to 50 files, each up to 100 MB. If you need more, merge them in batches and then merge the results.
Do links and bookmarks still work after merging?
Links that jump to another page of the same original file keep working, and web links are kept too. Bookmarks from the original files are not copied into the merged PDF.
