How to use PDF Page Counter

  1. Step 1: Add your PDFs

Drag and drop up to 50 PDF files, or choose them from your device. They are counted one after another.

  2. Step 2: Check the list

Each file shows its pages, page size, file size, encryption and PDF version, with the total pages at the side.

  3. Step 3: Copy or download

Press “Copy as text” to paste the list elsewhere, or “Download CSV” to open it in a spreadsheet.

How the pages are counted

Every PDF contains a page tree: the part of the file that lists its pages. The tool reads the page tree of each file with pdf-lib, a JavaScript PDF library, in a background thread of your browser. Pages are not drawn, so even long documents are counted quickly. Files are read one at a time and released afterwards, which keeps memory use low when you add many large files.

For each file the list shows:

  • Pages: the number of pages in the page tree, which is the number PDF readers show.
  • Page size: the size the pages are shown at, after any rotation. Sizes within 2 mm of A0 to A6, Letter, Legal or Tabloid are named; other sizes are given in millimetres and inches. Files with more than one size say so and list the sizes.
  • File size, whether the file is encrypted, and the PDF version (taken from the file's header, or from the document catalogue when that records a newer version).

The total adds up the pages of every file that could be counted. “Pages by paper size” shows how many pages of each size there are across all files.

Example

You add three files: a 12-page A4 report, a 3-page Letter form and a 25-page scan with 24 A4 pages and one A3 page. The total is 40 pages, and “Pages by paper size” lists A4: 36 pages, Letter: 3 pages and A3: 1 page. That is the breakdown a print shop needs for a quote, because larger sheets usually cost more.

Password-protected PDFs

Encryption protects the text and images of a PDF, but in many files the page tree itself is stored without encryption, so the pages can be counted without the password. When the page tree is encrypted too, the file is marked as protected and an “Enter password” button appears. The password is only used on your device to read that file, and it is not stored.

Copying and CSV

“Copy as text” copies the list with tab-separated columns, which you can paste into an email or straight into a spreadsheet. “Download CSV” saves one row per file with the page count, page size in millimetres, file size in bytes, encryption, PDF version and any problem, ready for Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice Calc.

Privacy

Your files are read by JavaScript on your own device. They are not uploaded to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Limitations

  • The count comes from the page tree, so a damaged file may fail to open or, rarely, give a wrong count. A “May be incomplete” note means the file does not end the way a complete PDF does.
  • Some password-protected PDFs can only be counted after you enter their password.
  • The tool does not tell colour pages from black-and-white ones, and blank pages are counted like any other page.
  • Up to 50 files at a time, 100 MB each.
  • Only A0 to A6, Letter, Legal and Tabloid are named; other sizes are shown in millimetres and inches.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count the pages of many PDFs at once?

Select or drop up to 50 PDF files together. Each file is counted in turn and the total appears at the side. Add more files at any time with “Add more”.

Can it count a password-protected PDF?

Often, yes, without the password, because the list of pages is frequently stored without encryption. If not, press “Enter password” next to the file. The password is only used on your device.

Are blank pages counted?

Yes. Every page in the file counts, whether it has content or not, just as in a PDF reader.

Can I get the result into Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. “Download CSV” saves a file that opens in any spreadsheet program, and “Copy as text” copies tab-separated columns you can paste into a sheet.

Does it tell colour pages from black-and-white pages?

No. It counts pages and reads their sizes, but it does not look at the content of the pages.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The files are read by your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to our server.

Combine several PDF files into one document, in the order you choose. The files are merged in your browser and never uploaded.

Extract pages from a PDF, or split it into several files: one per page, every few pages or by your own ranges. Works in your browser.

Remove unwanted pages from a PDF by clicking thumbnails or typing page numbers, then download the shorter file.

Rotate all or selected PDF pages by 90 or 180 degrees and save the file, without re-drawing the page content.

Drag page thumbnails into a new order, or type the order you want, and save the PDF with its pages rearranged.

Convert PDF pages to JPG or PNG images at 72, 150 or 300 DPI. Pick the pages, then download one image or a ZIP of all of them. Nothing is uploaded.
