How to use Edit PDF

  1. Step 1: Add your PDF

Drag and drop a PDF or choose it from your device. Its pages appear in the editor.

  2. Step 2: Make your changes

Click a line with Edit text to change it, drag a line, logo or picture with Move, or add text, white-out, highlights, drawings and pictures. Undo as you go.

  3. Step 3: Save and download

Press “Save edited PDF” and download the file, which has “-edited” added to the original name.

What you can do

  • Edit text: click a line of text in the PDF to change it or delete it.
  • Move: drag a line of text, a logo, a picture or a shape of the PDF to a new place. Text keeps its own font, size and colour, and pictures keep their full quality.
  • Add text: click anywhere and type. Choose a sans-serif, serif or monospace font, the size, bold, italic and colour.
  • White-out: drag a box over anything you want to hide, such as a wrong date or an old address. The box is white unless you pick another colour.
  • Highlight: drag across text to mark it, as with a highlighter pen.
  • Draw: write or sign with your mouse, finger or stylus.
  • Picture: add a logo, a stamp or a photo of your signature, then drag it into place and resize it.

Every edit can be selected, moved, styled again or deleted, and Undo and Redo work for all of them. Nothing changes in your file until you save, and even then you download a new copy.

How changing existing text works

A PDF is not a word-processor file. Its text is placed letter by letter at fixed positions, often with a font that is only partly stored in the file, so it cannot be retyped in place the way a Word document can. Edit text therefore covers the line you click with a patch in the colour of the page behind it, and puts your new text on the same line, with the same size and colour and the closest standard font: Helvetica for sans-serif fonts, Times for serif fonts and Courier for monospace fonts. For most documents, such as letters, bills and certificates made on a computer, the result looks the same as a real correction. A line in an unusual font will look slightly different.

Moving a line works differently: the line is drawn again at its new place from the PDF's own text, so it keeps its exact font and stays selectable. Only that line's letters move, not pictures, boxes or other text, and the old place is covered in colours taken from the page around it. When that cannot be done safely, the line is saved as a sharp picture of what you see instead (about 290 dots per inch), and you are told. That happens when part of the line is covered, when other text sits under it, on searchable scans, and for text filled with a gradient or picture. A line that is completely hidden cannot be picked up at all, so covered words never come back.

Moving pictures, logos and shapes

Press on a logo, a photo, a stamp or a drawn shape with Move and drag it where you want it. Pieces drawn on top of each other, such as the parts of a logo, move together. The picture itself is moved inside the PDF, not copied: it keeps its full quality, and its old place shows whatever was behind it, such as a coloured band or a gradient, with no patch. Text on a picture stays where it is, so move it as well. Backgrounds that fill the page or run from edge to edge are left alone, and a picture that is hidden or mostly covered by something else cannot be picked up.

Scanned PDFs are photos of paper: the whole page is one picture, so the words on it cannot be moved one by one. Unless they were made searchable (OCR), they contain no text to click or drag; use White-out and Add text on them instead.

Text in Hindi and other scripts

The standard PDF fonts cover English and other Western European languages. Text containing characters they do not have, such as ₹, Hindi or Tamil letters, or emoji, is saved as a sharp picture of the text (about 300 dots per inch). It looks the same, but it cannot be selected, copied or searched. The settings panel tells you when this applies.

What stays the same

Your edits are added on top of each page. Apart from pictures and shapes you move, the original text, images, links, bookmarks and form fields are not re-drawn, so they keep their quality, and the file usually grows only a little. Large pictures make it grow more.

Privacy

Your PDF is opened, edited and saved by JavaScript on your own device. It is not uploaded to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Limitations

  • White-out, Edit text and moving text only cover the old words. They stay in the file and can still be copied, searched or extracted, so do not use them to hide passwords, ID numbers or other private information.
  • Edit text uses the closest standard font (Helvetica, Times or Courier), so a line in an unusual font looks slightly different after the change. Rotated text cannot be edited or moved.
  • Move moves one line, or one picture or shape, at a time. Lines that are partly covered, overlap other text, sit on a searchable scan or are filled with a gradient are saved as a picture of the text, which cannot be selected. Text that is part of a picture, such as a scan without OCR or a logo, cannot be moved on its own.
  • A moved picture or shape is drawn above the rest of the page at its new place, and text on it does not move with it. In the rare PDF whose page cannot be changed safely, the picture is copied to its new place and its old place is covered instead, and you are told.
  • Links on moved text or pictures stay at their old place.
  • Text with ₹, Hindi or other characters the standard PDF fonts lack is saved as a picture of the text, which cannot be selected or searched.
  • Scanned PDFs have no text to edit: use White-out and Add text instead.
  • Text does not wrap by itself. Press Enter to start a new line.
  • Form fields are not filled in by this tool, and an edit drawn over a field appears beneath the field's own box in PDF readers.
  • PDFs that need a password, and PDFs with owner restrictions on editing, must be unlocked first. Any digital signature in the file becomes invalid after editing.
  • Encrypted PDFs that open without a password are saved as a new, unencrypted copy of their pages, without bookmarks or form fields.
  • Up to 300 pages at a time. Everything happens in your browser's memory, so very large files can fail on phones.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the existing text in my PDF?

Yes, in PDFs made on a computer (from Word, a browser, billing software and so on). Choose Edit text and click a line: it is covered with a patch in the page’s background colour, and your new text takes its place in a similar standard font, at the same size and in the same colour. Scanned PDFs are pictures, so their text cannot be edited this way.

Does White-out permanently delete the text underneath?

No. It hides the text on the page, but the original words stay in the file and can still be copied or found by search. To share a document without private information, remove it at the source, for example in the Word file, and create a new PDF.

How do I add my signature to a PDF?

Choose Draw and sign with your mouse, finger or stylus, or choose Picture to add a photo or scan of your signature. A PNG with a transparent background looks best; the Image Signature Maker on this site can make one.

Why is my text with ₹ or Hindi saved as a picture?

The standard PDF fonts used for added text do not contain those characters. So that the text still looks right in every PDF reader, it is saved as a sharp picture of the text instead. It cannot be selected or searched.

Can I move text to another place in my PDF?

Yes. Choose Move, press on a line and drag it where you want it. The line keeps its original font, size and colour, because it is drawn again from the PDF’s own text, and its old place is covered to match the page. If the line is partly covered or on a searchable scan, it is moved as a sharp picture of the text instead. Text on scans without OCR is part of the picture and cannot be moved.

Can I move a logo or picture in my PDF?

Yes. Choose Move, press on the logo, picture or shape and drag it to its new place. It is moved inside the PDF rather than copied, so it keeps its full quality, and its old place shows the background that was behind it. Text written on it stays where it is; move it separately.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is opened, edited and saved by your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to our server.
