Runs entirely in your browser. Your files and text are not uploaded.

How to use Unlock PDF with Password

  1. Step 1: Add the protected PDF

Drag and drop it or choose it from your device. The tool shows how the file is protected.

  2. Step 2: Enter the password

Type the password you use to open it. For a file that only restricts printing or editing, confirm that you may remove the restrictions instead.

  3. Step 3: Unlock and download

Press the button and download the copy, which opens without a password and has no restrictions.

How unlocking works

A password-protected PDF is encrypted: its pages and document properties can only be read with the key that the password unlocks. When you type the password, the tool decrypts the file in your browser with pdf-lib, a JavaScript PDF library, and saves a copy without encryption. Before the download is offered, the copy is opened again to check that every page is there and that the page content was decrypted correctly. The file and the password are not uploaded.

Only the protection is removed. Text, images, links, bookmarks, form fields and document properties stay as they were. A digital signature in the file is no longer valid in the unlocked copy, because the file has been rewritten.

No password guessing

This tool does not guess, recover or crack passwords. You need the password the file was protected with. If you have forgotten it, ask the person or organisation that sent the file.

Many issuers explain their password format. UIDAI's FAQ, checked in October 2026, says the e-Aadhaar password is the first four letters of your name in capital letters followed by your year of birth. Banks, fund houses and tax portals usually describe their format in the email that came with the statement.

Files that only restrict printing or editing

Some PDFs open without a password but carry owner restrictions that stop printing, copying or editing in PDF readers that respect them. Such a file is encrypted with an empty open password, so every PDF reader can decrypt it; the restrictions are flags that readers are asked to follow. That is why the tool can remove them without the owner password, after you confirm that you may.

Only do this for files you own or are entitled to edit, such as your own documents. Removing restrictions from a document someone else shared with you may go against the terms under which it was shared.

Which protection is supported

The tool removes standard PDF password protection: RC4 (40 and 128-bit), AES-128 and AES-256, including the older AES-256 method from Acrobat 9. It cannot open:

  • PDFs protected with a certificate (a digital ID) instead of a password;
  • PDFs protected by rights-management servers, which check permissions online;
  • rare variants that encrypt text and page content, or only the attachments, with different settings. These are refused with an explanation instead of producing a broken copy.

Keep the copy safe

The unlocked copy opens for anyone who gets it. Store it where only you can reach it, and protect it again with Protect PDF before you send it on, if it holds personal or financial details.

Limitations

  • You must know the password. The tool does not guess, recover or crack passwords.
  • PDFs protected with a certificate (digital ID) or by a rights-management server cannot be unlocked here.
  • Rare encryption variants that use different settings for text, page content or attachments are refused.
  • A digital signature in the original is not valid in the unlocked copy.
  • Anyone who gets the unlocked copy can open it, so store and share it carefully.
  • Damaged files may not open. If a file opens in your PDF reader but not here, save a new copy from the reader and try that.
  • Large files take time and memory, because the decryption runs in your browser. A PDF close to 100 MB can take a minute or two on a computer, longer on a phone, and may not fit in a phone's memory.

Frequently asked questions

Can this tool open a PDF if I forgot the password?

No. It only removes protection with a password you already know, and it never tries to guess or crack passwords. Ask the person or organisation that sent you the file for the password.

Is my PDF or password uploaded?

No. The file is decrypted by your browser on your own device. The PDF and the password are never sent to our server, and the password field is cleared when you press “Start over”.

What is the password of my e-Aadhaar or bank statement?

The issuer sets it. According to UIDAI’s FAQ (checked in October 2026), the e-Aadhaar password is the first four letters of your name in capital letters followed by your year of birth, for example ABCD1990. Banks and fund houses explain their format in the email that came with the statement.

Why do I have to confirm that I may remove the restrictions?

Owner restrictions are set by the person who made the file, and the unlocked copy has none. Removing them is fine for your own documents or files you are entitled to edit, but not for documents shared with you under conditions.

Will the unlocked PDF look the same?

Yes. Only the encryption is removed; pages, text, images, links, bookmarks and form fields stay as they were. A digital signature, if there was one, is no longer valid in the copy.

Why is my PDF refused?

The message tells you why. Common reasons are that the file is not protected at all, that it is protected with a certificate instead of a password, or that it is damaged.

Add an open password to a PDF with AES-256 encryption, and optionally restrict printing, copying and editing. Works in your browser.

Combine several PDF files into one document, in the order you choose. The files are merged in your browser and never uploaded.

Extract pages from a PDF, or split it into several files: one per page, every few pages or by your own ranges. Works in your browser.

Make scanned and photo-heavy PDFs smaller by rebuilding pages as compressed JPEG images in your browser.

Count the pages in one or many PDF files at once and see a total with each file’s page size, handy for print cost estimates.
