How words and characters are counted
- Words are groups of letters or numbers separated by spaces or line breaks, the same way word processors count them. Hyphenated words such as well-known and contractions such as don't count as one word. Punctuation on its own is not counted.
- Chinese and Japanese text is counted one word per character, because these languages are written without spaces between words.
- Characters counts every visible character, including spaces and punctuation. Emoji and accented letters count as one character each, even when they are stored as several code points.
- Sentences end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Abbreviations such as "e.g." can occasionally be counted as a sentence break.
- Paragraphs are lines that contain text, so every press of Enter starts a new paragraph.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute for adults reading non-fiction in English. Speaking time uses 140 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations. Your own speed may be faster or slower, so treat both figures as estimates.
Keyword density
The keyword table shows your most frequent words and their share of all words, leaving out very common words such as the, and and with. It is useful for spotting words you overuse. For SEO there is no ideal density to aim for; write naturally for your reader.
Limitations
- Counts can differ slightly from Microsoft Word or Google Docs, which treat some symbols, numbers and abbreviations differently.
- The tool counts plain text only. Formatting, images and tables pasted from documents are ignored.
- Your text is not saved. Refreshing or closing the page clears it.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser. Your text is not uploaded or stored, and it disappears when you close the page.
Does the word counter count spaces?
Spaces never count as words. The character count shows two figures: one including spaces and one without them.
Why is my count different from Microsoft Word?
Word processors use slightly different rules for symbols, numbers with punctuation and abbreviations. The difference is usually a handful of words in a long document.
How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
At an average reading speed of 238 words per minute, 1,000 words take a little over 4 minutes to read silently and about 7 minutes to read aloud.
Can I count words in Hindi or other languages?
Yes. Any language that separates words with spaces, such as Hindi, Marathi or Tamil, is counted the same way as English. Chinese and Japanese are counted per character.
