Gross amount including GST —

How it is calculated

GST   = net × rate ÷ 100
Gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Amounts are rounded to the nearest paisa, with half a paisa rounded up. CGST is half the GST rounded up to the paisa and SGST/UTGST is the rest, so the two always add up to the total GST.

How GST is calculated

GST is a percentage of the taxable value, the price before tax. With a GST rate of r%:

  • Adding GST (the amount excludes GST): GST = net × r ÷ 100, and gross = net × (1 + r ÷ 100).
  • Removing GST (the amount includes GST): net = gross × 100 ÷ (100 + r), and GST = gross − net.

To remove GST, do not take r% of the inclusive price. 18% of ₹1,180 is ₹212.40, but the GST inside ₹1,180 is only ₹180. Dividing by (100 + r) gives the right answer; this is often called reverse GST.

Inclusive and exclusive prices

A GST-exclusive price is the value before tax, as on most quotations and business invoices. A GST-inclusive price already contains the tax, as with an MRP or a restaurant bill. Use Add GST for the first and Remove GST for the second.

CGST, SGST, UTGST and IGST

When the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state, the supply is intra-state and the GST is split in two equal halves: CGST for the central government and SGST for the state. In union territories without a legislature, such as Chandigarh or Ladakh, UTGST takes the place of SGST. When they are in different states, the supply is inter-state and the full rate is charged as IGST. So 18% is either 9% CGST + 9% SGST, or 18% IGST.

GST rates after GST 2.0

The rate changes known as GST 2.0 took effect on 22 September 2025. The main slabs are now 5%, 18% and 40%, with 40% reserved for luxury and sin goods. Nil-rated and exempt items are at 0%, and special rates apply to gold, silver and jewellery (3%), cut and polished diamonds (1.5%) and rough diamonds (0.25%). The old 12% and 28% slabs for goods were removed. The 28% rate stayed only for tobacco and pan masala until 1 February 2026, when bidi moved to 18% and other tobacco products to 40%. Compensation cess is nil from 1 February 2026, so the calculator adds no cess.

These rates were checked on 16 October 2026 against the government's press release and CBIC notifications. The rate for a product or service depends on its HSN or SAC code, so confirm it with official CBIC sources or a tax professional.

Worked examples

Example Working Result
Add 18% GST to ₹10,000, intra-state 10,000 × 18 ÷ 100 GST ₹1,800 (CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900), gross ₹11,800
Remove 18% GST from ₹5,900, inter-state 5,900 × 100 ÷ 118 Net ₹5,000, IGST ₹900
Remove 5% GST from ₹999, intra-state 999 × 100 ÷ 105 Net ₹951.43, GST ₹47.57 (CGST ₹23.79 + SGST ₹23.78)

Rounding

Amounts are rounded to the nearest paisa, and half a paisa is rounded up. In the last example the GST of ₹47.57 cannot be split into two equal halves, so CGST is rounded up to ₹23.79 and SGST gets the remaining ₹23.78. That way CGST + SGST always equals the total GST. Accounting software that works out CGST and SGST separately may differ by a paisa, and some invoices round the total to the nearest rupee.

Limitations

  • The calculator uses the rate you choose. It does not look up the rate for your goods or services; check the HSN or SAC code with official sources.
  • It does not add compensation cess or any other levy, and it does not handle reverse charge or the composition scheme.
  • Results are rounded to the paisa. Invoices, accounting software and GST returns may round differently, for example each tax line separately or the total to the nearest rupee.
  • It is a calculator, not tax advice. For returns and input tax credit, follow the GST law and your tax professional's advice.
  • The numbers you type are not saved or sent anywhere. Refreshing the page clears them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on a price?

Multiply the price before GST by the rate and divide by 100. For ₹2,000 at 18%, the GST is 2,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹360, so the total is ₹2,360. Choose Add GST in the calculator to do this.

How do I find the GST included in a price?

Multiply the inclusive price by 100 and divide by (100 + rate) to get the price before GST; the difference is the GST. For ₹2,360 at 18%: 2,360 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹2,000, so the GST is ₹360. Choose Remove GST to do this.

When do I charge CGST and SGST, and when IGST?

Charge CGST and SGST (or UTGST in a union territory without a legislature) when the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state. Charge IGST when they are in different states, and on imports. The total rate is the same either way: 18% is 9% CGST + 9% SGST, or 18% IGST.

What are the GST rates after 22 September 2025?

Under GST 2.0 the main rates are 5%, 18% and 40%, plus 0% for nil-rated and exempt items and special rates of 3% for gold, silver and jewellery, 1.5% for cut and polished diamonds and 0.25% for rough diamonds. Check the rate for your HSN or SAC code with official CBIC sources.

Can I still calculate GST at 12% or 28%?

Yes. Type any rate from 0 to 100 in the rate box. This is useful for checking invoices dated before 22 September 2025, when the 12% and 28% slabs still applied to many goods.

Why are CGST and SGST sometimes one paisa apart?

When the total GST is an odd number of paise, it cannot be halved exactly. The calculator rounds CGST up to the paisa and gives SGST/UTGST the rest, so the two always add up to the total GST.
