How the image tools work
Each tool decodes your picture with the browser's own image engine, changes it on an HTML canvas and encodes the result again as JPG, PNG or WebP. Because this happens locally, you can use the tools for private photos and documents without sending them anywhere.
Choosing a format
- JPG is best for photos. It is small, but it does not support transparency, and every save loses a little detail.
- PNG is lossless and supports transparency. It is ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics, but photos saved as PNG are large.
- WebP gives smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality and supports transparency. Almost every current browser can open it, though some older apps cannot.
Good to know
Editing tools save a new copy of the image. Camera details stored in the file (EXIF data such as the camera model or GPS location) are usually removed when an image is re-encoded, unless a tool says otherwise.
