How to use Instagram Story Resizer
-
Step 1: Add your photos
Drag and drop up to 20 photos or screenshots, or choose them from your device.
-
Step 2: Choose the size and fit
Pick 1080 × 1920 for stories and reel covers or 1440 × 2560 for story ads, then fit the whole photo on a colour or crop it to fill the screen.
-
Step 3: Check and download
Press “Resize images”, check the safe zones in the preview and download the images to add to your story.
Story and reel size
Stories and reels fill a phone screen held upright, an aspect ratio of 9:16. The usual size is 1080 × 1920 pixels, which matches the 1,080-pixel width Instagram uses for photos (Instagram Help Centre, checked 16 October 2026). For story ads, Meta's Ads Guide asks for 1440 × 2560 pixels (checked 16 October 2026). That is the same shape with more pixels, so a story looks the same at either size; the larger one only helps when your photo has the detail for it.
Fitting a photo into 9:16
Most photos are 3:4 or 4:3, much wider than a story. You have two choices:
- Whole image (the default here) shows all of the photo and fills the space around it with a colour. A 4000 × 3000 landscape photo becomes 1080 × 810 in the middle of a 1080 × 1920 story, with 555 pixels of colour above and below.
- Crop to fill fills the screen and cuts off the sides. The same landscape photo keeps only its middle 42%. Portrait photos lose much less.
Pick the background with the colour picker or the White and Black buttons. Black suits dark photos; white suits product shots and text.
Safe zones
Instagram shows your name and a progress bar at the top of a story, and the reply bar and buttons at the bottom, so text there can be hidden. Meta's guide for story ads says to keep "roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom, and 6% on each side" free of text and logos. At 1080 × 1920 that is about 270 pixels at the top, 670 at the bottom and 65 at each side. Ordinary stories usually cover less of the bottom than ads, so these margins are on the safe side. After resizing, the preview shades these areas, so you can see whether a face or a caption is in the way.
Reel covers in the profile grid
A reel cover is 9:16 like a story, but your profile grid shows it as a 3:4 tile from the middle of the image. For a 1080 × 1920 cover, that is the middle 1080 × 1440, so about 240 pixels at the top and bottom do not show in the grid. The small preview shows that tile; keep the title of a reel cover near the centre.
Also for WhatsApp Status and YouTube Shorts
The same upright 9:16 shape also suits WhatsApp Status. For Shorts thumbnails, YouTube Help suggests 2160 × 3840 (checked 16 October 2026); 1080 × 1920 has the same shape.
Privacy
Your photos are resized in your browser and never uploaded. The saved files contain no EXIF data such as the GPS location.
Limitations
- The safe zones are a guide. Instagram's layout differs between phones and app versions, and Meta's percentages are written for story ads.
- Instagram can change its sizes and layout. The sizes and margins here were checked on 16 October 2026.
- The tool makes still images. It does not edit videos, add text or stickers, or post to Instagram.
- Photos are saved again as JPG (or the format you choose), so a little detail is lost, and Instagram compresses them once more.
- Enlarging a small photo cannot add detail: a 1440 × 2560 story made from a small photo is not sharper than a 1080 × 1920 one.
- Only the first frame of animated GIF and WebP files is used. HEIC and AVIF photos are not accepted; convert them to JPG first with the Image Converter.
Frequently asked questions
What size is an Instagram story?
9:16, usually 1080 × 1920 pixels. Meta’s ads guide asks for 1440 × 2560 for story ads, which is the same shape with more pixels. Both fill the screen in the same way.
How do I put a whole photo in a story without cropping it?
Keep “Whole image” selected. The photo is fitted inside the 9:16 frame and the space around it is filled with the colour you choose, for example white or black. Nothing of the photo is cut off.
Where should I put text in a story?
Away from the edges. Meta suggests keeping roughly the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% at each side free of text and logos (its guide for story ads). The shaded areas in the preview show these margins.
Is this the right size for a reel cover?
Yes. A reel cover is 9:16 like a story, so 1080 × 1920 fits. Your profile grid shows only a 3:4 tile from the middle of it, which the small preview shows, so keep titles near the centre.
Can I use it for WhatsApp Status or YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Both use the same upright 9:16 shape. YouTube suggests 2160 × 3840 for Shorts thumbnails; 1080 × 1920 has the same shape, and Shorts thumbnails can currently only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The photos are resized by your browser on your own device and are not sent to our server or to Instagram.
