Instagram's post sizes
Instagram's Help Centre page "Image resolution of photos you share on Instagram" (checked 16 October 2026) says photos are shared at up to 1,080 pixels wide. A photo keeps its resolution when its aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which means 566 to 1,440 pixels high at 1,080 wide. Photos outside that range are cropped by Instagram, wider photos are reduced to 1,080 pixels, and photos narrower than 320 pixels are enlarged.
This tool makes every photo exactly one of these sizes:
| Shape | Size in pixels | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Square 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | The classic square post |
| Portrait 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | The most used feed size |
| Portrait 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 | Phone photos and a full profile grid tile |
| Landscape 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 | Wide scenes and group photos |
The 3:4 profile grid
In January 2025 Instagram replaced the square tiles of the profile grid with taller 3:4 rectangles (announced by Instagram's head Adam Mosseri and reported by Business Today on 21 January 2025). Since the end of May 2025 you can also post 3:4 photos (reported by The Verge on 30 May 2025). A grid tile shows the middle part of each post. A square post loses an eighth of its width on each side there and a 4:5 post a thin strip, while a 3:4 post shows in full. After resizing, the preview shades the strips the grid hides and shows the tile itself.
Whole photo or crop
- Whole image (the default here) fits the photo inside the frame and fills the rest with a colour, so nothing is cut off. A 4000 × 3000 landscape photo in a 4:5 post becomes 1080 × 810 with bands of 270 pixels above and below.
- Crop to fill fills the frame and trims the edges, keeping the centre. Use it when the subject is in the middle and you want no border.
For a carousel, give every photo the same shape: by default Instagram shows all slides in the shape of the first one and crops the others.
Quality
Instagram compresses photos again when you post them. Starting from exactly 1,080 pixels wide spares Instagram an extra resize. Photos are saved as JPG at 90% quality by default, which keeps them sharp without making the files large. Small photos are enlarged to 1,080 pixels, which makes them look soft.
Privacy
Your photos are resized in your browser and never uploaded. The saved files contain no EXIF data such as the camera model or the GPS location.
Limitations
- Instagram changes its formats and its profile grid from time to time. The sizes here were checked on 16 October 2026.
- The tool does not post to Instagram or connect to your account.
- Photos are saved again as JPG (or the format you choose), so a little detail is lost, and Instagram compresses them once more after upload.
- The grid preview shows the middle 3:4 part, which is how the grid shows posts by default.
- Enlarging small photos cannot add detail, so they look soft.
- Only the first frame of animated GIF and WebP files is used. HEIC and AVIF photos are not accepted; convert them to JPG first with the Image Converter.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best size for an Instagram post?
A width of 1,080 pixels in one of Instagram’s shapes: 1080 × 1350 (4:5) is the most used, 1080 × 1440 (3:4) fills a profile grid tile and matches most phone cameras, 1080 × 1080 is the square and 1080 × 566 is the widest. Instagram keeps photos at up to 1,080 pixels wide, so larger files are reduced anyway.
How do I post a whole photo on Instagram without it being cropped?
Choose a shape, keep “Whole image” selected and pick a border colour. The whole photo is fitted inside a frame that Instagram accepts as it is, so Instagram has nothing to crop.
Why does my post look cut off on my profile?
Since January 2025 the profile grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles and only shows the middle of each post. Square and landscape posts lose their sides there but still appear in full in the feed. Choose Portrait 3:4 if the look of your grid matters most.
Should I use 4:5 or 3:4?
3:4 shows the whole post in the grid and matches the photos of most phone cameras. 4:5 has been Instagram’s portrait size for years, and some third-party posting tools may still accept only 4:5. Both are 1,080 pixels wide.
Can I resize all the photos of a carousel at once?
Yes. Add up to 20 photos, choose one shape and fit for all of them and download a ZIP file. Using the same shape for every slide stops Instagram from cropping the later ones.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The photos are resized by your browser on your own device and are not sent to our server or to Instagram.
