1280 × 720 pixels

The usual size for years. Small files that look sharp in lists and search results.

Fit

The image fills the frame. Edges that do not fit are cropped, keeping the centre.

GIF and BMP images are saved as PNG when you keep the original format.

Used for JPG and WebP. 85 to 92% keeps photos sharp with sensible file sizes.

The YouTube app on a phone accepts thumbnails up to 2 MB; YouTube Studio on a computer accepts up to 50 MB. A JPG or WebP that would be larger is saved at a lower quality until it fits.

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with this colour.

Runs entirely in your browser. Your files and text are not uploaded.

How to use YouTube Thumbnail Resizer

  1. Step 1: Add your image

Drag and drop the picture you want as a thumbnail, or choose it from your device. Photos, screenshots and designs all work.

  2. Step 2: Pick the size and fit

Choose 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160, then crop the image to fill the 16:9 frame or show the whole image on a colour.

  3. Step 3: Resize and download

Press “Resize images”, check the preview and the file size, and download the JPG to add in YouTube Studio or the YouTube app.

What YouTube asks for

YouTube Help's page "Add video thumbnails" (checked 16 October 2026) says a custom thumbnail should:

  • be 16:9 and "as large as possible", with a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels and a width of at least 640 pixels;
  • be a JPG or PNG file;
  • stay under 2 MB when you add it in the YouTube app on a phone, or under 50 MB in YouTube Studio on a computer.

For years the same page recommended 1280 × 720, and that is still the size most channels use. It looks sharp in search results and on phones and makes small files. Choose 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160 when many of your viewers watch on large screens or TVs. Only verified YouTube accounts can add custom thumbnails.

Crop to fill or show the whole image

Every thumbnail made here is exactly the size you choose. There are two ways to get there:

  • Crop to fill (the default) scales the image until it covers the whole 16:9 frame and cuts off what sticks out, keeping the centre. A 4000 × 3000 photo loses 375 pixels at the top and 375 at the bottom, and the remaining 4000 × 2250 is scaled to 1280 × 720.
  • Whole image scales the picture until it fits inside the frame and fills the empty bands with a colour you pick. Use it for square logos, portrait photos or screenshots where nothing may be cut off.

Images smaller than the chosen size are enlarged, which makes them soft; the list marks them "Enlarged". For a sharp thumbnail, start with an image at least as large as the size you choose.

Staying under 2 MB

A 1280 × 720 JPG is usually a few hundred KB. A 3840 × 2160 thumbnail of a detailed photo can be larger than 2 MB, and the YouTube app then refuses it. With "Keep each image under 2 MB" switched on, the tool first saves the image at the quality you set. If the file is too large, it tries lower JPG qualities and keeps the highest one that fits, and the list shows it, for example "84% quality". PNG is lossless, so its size cannot be reduced this way; that is why JPG is the default here. If you switch the option off, files over 2 MB are marked "Over 2 MB", which is fine when you upload from a computer.

Check it small

After resizing, the preview shows your thumbnail with the corner where YouTube shows the video length, next to a copy at the small size used in lists of videos. If the words are hard to read there, use fewer and bigger words.

Privacy

Everything happens in your browser. Your images are not uploaded to our server or to YouTube, and the saved thumbnail contains no EXIF data such as the GPS location.

Limitations

  • YouTube can change its thumbnail rules. If an upload is refused, check YouTube Help for the current size and file limits (checked 16 October 2026).
  • The tool resizes, crops and pads an existing image. It does not add text or design thumbnails, and it does not upload anything to YouTube.
  • Every thumbnail is saved again, so JPG and WebP files lose a little detail. Lowering the quality to stay under 2 MB loses more; the list shows the quality used.
  • Enlarging a small image cannot add detail, so thumbnails made from small pictures look soft.
  • Only the first frame of animated GIF and WebP files is used. HEIC and AVIF photos are not accepted; convert them to JPG first with the Image Converter.
  • Colours are converted to sRGB, so photos with a wide colour profile such as Display P3 can look slightly less saturated.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

It should be 16:9 and at least 640 pixels wide. YouTube Help now suggests 3840 × 2160 and says thumbnails should be as large as possible (checked 16 October 2026). 1280 × 720 is still the most used size and keeps files small; 1920 × 1080 is a middle ground.

Why does YouTube say my thumbnail file is too large?

The YouTube app on a phone accepts thumbnails up to 2 MB, while YouTube Studio on a computer accepts up to 50 MB. Keep “Keep each image under 2 MB” switched on and save as JPG. A 1280 × 720 JPG is almost always well under 2 MB anyway.

Should I crop my image or keep the whole image?

Crop to fill gives a full-frame thumbnail and suits photos with the subject in the middle. Choose Whole image for logos, portrait photos and screenshots where nothing may be cut off; the empty bands are filled with the colour you pick.

Why can I not add a custom thumbnail at all?

YouTube allows custom thumbnails only for verified accounts, so verify your account first. Thumbnails for Shorts can currently be added only in YouTube Studio on a computer, and YouTube suggests a 9:16 image for them.

Is JPG or PNG better for a thumbnail?

YouTube accepts both. JPG makes much smaller files for photos, which matters for the 2 MB limit, so it is the default here. PNG keeps text and flat graphics crisp but can be several times larger, and at 3840 × 2160 a PNG is often over 2 MB.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is resized by your browser on your own device and is never sent to our server or to YouTube. You upload the finished thumbnail to YouTube yourself.

Resize JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP images to an exact width and height or by percentage. Resize up to 20 images at once, right in your browser.

Reduce the file size of JPG, PNG and WebP images with adjustable quality. Your images never leave your device.

Convert JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP images to JPG, PNG or WebP. AVIF and HEIC work when your browser can open them. No uploads.

Resize photos for Instagram posts: square 1:1, portrait 4:5 or 3:4, or landscape 1.91:1, all 1080 px wide. Keep the whole photo or crop it.

Fit any photo into a 1080 × 1920 (9:16) Instagram story or reel cover on a colour of your choice, and check the safe zones in a preview.

Fit a whole photo into a square 640 × 640 WhatsApp profile picture without cropping, on a colour you choose, and preview it as a circle.
