WhatsApp profile photo size
WhatsApp does not publish an exact size for profile photos; we found none in its Help Center on 16 October 2026. What is clear from the app: WhatsApp makes you crop your photo to a square when you set it, shows it as a circle in chats and contact lists, and shows the whole square when someone opens it. The sizes quoted most often are 640 × 640 and 500 × 500 pixels. Documentation from WhatsApp Business API providers says WhatsApp keeps profile pictures at up to 640 pixels on each side, so this tool makes a 640 × 640 square, which looks sharp on phones without being needlessly large.
A full DP without cropping
Because WhatsApp insists on a square, a normal rectangular photo loses its top and bottom or its sides. The fix is to make the photo square yourself first, in one of three ways:
- Whole image (the default) fits the full photo inside the square and fills the rest with a colour. A 3000 × 4000 portrait photo becomes 480 × 640 in the middle of the square, with bands of 80 pixels on the left and right.
- Inside the circle makes the photo small enough that even its corners stay inside the circle, so nothing is hidden in the round view either. The same portrait photo becomes 384 × 512, and its diagonal is exactly as long as the circle is wide.
- Crop to fill fills the square and trims the longer side, keeping the centre.
Pick the background with the colour picker or the White and Black buttons. Because the result is already square, WhatsApp's crop box covers the whole picture and nothing is cut off when you set it.
The circle preview
After resizing, the preview shows the square photo with a dashed line where WhatsApp's circle falls, and small round copies like the ones in a chat list. If the circle cuts off a face or a word, choose "Inside the circle", or crop the photo first so the subject is in the middle.
Quality and privacy
The photo is saved as a JPG at 90% quality, which keeps faces sharp. WhatsApp may resize or compress it again when you set it. Your photo is processed in your browser, is never uploaded to our server, and the saved file contains no EXIF data such as the GPS location. This tool is not made by or affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.
Limitations
- WhatsApp publishes no official profile photo size and may change how it shows photos. 640 × 640 is a widely used size, not an official one.
- The tool does not change your WhatsApp settings or upload anything. You set the photo yourself in WhatsApp.
- The photo is saved again as JPG (or the format you choose), so a little detail is lost, and WhatsApp may compress it once more.
- Transparent parts of a PNG are filled with the background colour when the photo is saved as JPG.
- Enlarging a small photo cannot add detail, so photos smaller than 640 × 640 look soft.
- Only the first frame of animated GIF and WebP files is used. HEIC and AVIF photos are not accepted; convert them to JPG first with the Image Converter.
Frequently asked questions
What is the right size for a WhatsApp DP?
WhatsApp does not publish one. The photo has to be square, and 640 × 640 and 500 × 500 pixels are the sizes quoted most often. Larger photos work too, but there is little point: WhatsApp Business API providers report that WhatsApp keeps profile pictures at up to 640 pixels on each side.
How do I set a full photo as my WhatsApp DP without cropping?
Add the photo, keep “Whole image” selected, pick a background colour and download the square JPG. Then set it as your profile photo in WhatsApp. Because the picture is already square, WhatsApp’s crop box covers all of it and nothing is cut off.
Why is part of my photo still hidden in chats?
WhatsApp shows profile photos as a circle in chats, which hides the corners of the square. If the corners of your photo matter, choose “Inside the circle”: the whole photo then fits inside the circle, with more background around it.
Which background colour should I choose?
White or black look neat with most photos. You can also pick any colour with the colour picker, for example one that matches your clothes. Transparent parts of PNG images get this colour too, because JPG cannot store transparency.
Does it work for WhatsApp Business photos and group icons?
Yes. Business profile photos and group icons are also square pictures shown as a circle, so the same square image works for them.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The photo is resized by your browser on your own device and is never sent to our server or to WhatsApp.
