PDF to Word

Turn the text of a PDF into an editable Word file with its paragraphs, headings and lists. Images, tables, columns and exact fonts are not kept.

Text only. The Word file gets the text of your PDF with its paragraphs, headings, bold and italic words and bullet lists. Images, tables, columns and the exact fonts and layout are not kept, and scanned PDFs cannot be converted.

Drag & drop your PDF here

One PDF with selectable text, up to 100 MB.

Word settings

Off: the text runs on from page to page, and a paragraph split by a page break is joined.

Page numbers, and header or footer lines that contain one, are removed. Other lines repeated on many pages, such as a watermark, are kept once.

Runs entirely in your browser. Your files and text are not uploaded.

How to use PDF to Word

  1. Step 1: Add your PDF

Drop a PDF onto the page or choose it from your device. A protected file asks for its password.

  2. Step 2: Convert to Word

Choose whether each PDF page should start a new Word page, then press “Convert to Word”.

  3. Step 3: Check and download

Read through the text preview, then download the .docx file and open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.

How the conversion works

A PDF does not store paragraphs. It stores small pieces of text, each placed at an exact position on the page, which is why a PDF looks the same everywhere. This tool reads those pieces with PDF.js, the open-source PDF library used by Firefox, and rebuilds the document from their positions: pieces on the same baseline become a line, lines are put in reading order, and lines are joined into paragraphs where the spacing, indentation and sentence endings show that a paragraph continues. The result is saved as a .docx file that uses Word's own styles, so the text reflows when you edit it. All of this happens in your browser.

What is kept

  • Text and paragraphs. Lines that wrap are joined into one paragraph. Short lines, such as an address, keep their line breaks.
  • Headings. Text that is clearly larger than the body text becomes Heading 1, 2 or 3, so it also appears in Word's navigation pane.
  • Bold and italic words, when the PDF's font names say so (for example "Arial-BoldMT").
  • Bullet lists become Word bullet lists. Numbered items keep their numbers as text.
  • Words split at the end of a line are joined again. The hyphen stays when the document also writes the word with one, such as "well-known".
  • Two-column text is read one column after the other.

What is not kept, and why

The converter copies text, not layout. Images, charts and drawings are left out. Tables become lines of text with tab stops at the column positions, not Word tables. Columns, text boxes and exact positions turn into one flow of text, and the body text uses Word's standard Calibri font, so the pages will not look like the PDF. Page numbers are left out, together with header and footer lines that contain them, and other lines repeated on many pages, such as a watermark, are kept only once; you can switch this off. Text typed into form fields and comments is not included. Check the result before you send or print it.

Scanned PDFs

A scanned page is a picture of text. It contains no text that can be copied, so the tool tells you that the PDF has no selectable text instead of giving you an empty file. Converting a scan needs text recognition (OCR), which this tool does not do. A quick check: if you cannot select single words in the PDF with your mouse, it is a scan.

Privacy

Your PDF is opened and converted by JavaScript on your own device. It is not uploaded to a server, and the Word file is created on your device as well.

Limitations

  • Scanned PDFs and pages that are only images have no text to convert. OCR is not included.
  • Images, charts, real Word tables, columns, text boxes, colours and the original fonts and sizes are not kept.
  • The reading order is worked out from where the text sits on the page. Magazine layouts, forms and slides can come out in an unexpected order.
  • Some PDFs use fonts that do not say which letter each shape stands for. Their text comes out as wrong characters, which no converter can fix without OCR. The tool warns you when it notices this.
  • Bold and italic are recognised from font names, so text made bold in other ways can be missed.
  • Bullets drawn as shapes instead of characters (as browsers do when they print a web page) are not recognised, so those list items become plain lines.
  • Text in Indian scripts such as Hindi can come out with missing or misplaced letters when the PDF does not record how the letters combine. Vowel signs stored in the wrong order are corrected where possible.
  • Text in form fields, comments and other annotations is not included.
  • Right-to-left scripts and vertical Asian text have basic support only.
  • Very long PDFs take longer and need more memory, especially on phones.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Word file look exactly like my PDF?

No. The tool copies the text, paragraphs, headings, lists and bold or italic words into a clean Word document. Images, tables, columns and the exact fonts and positions are not kept, so the pages will look different. Check the preview before you download.

Why does it say my PDF has no selectable text?

The PDF is most likely a scan or a photo of pages, so it holds pictures of text rather than text. Converting it needs text recognition (OCR), which this tool does not do. If you cannot select words in the PDF with your mouse, it is a scan.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is read and the Word file is created by your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to our server, so you can use the tool for private documents.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the password. The tool asks for it and uses it only on your device to open the file. It cannot remove or guess a password you do not have.

Why are some characters wrong in the result?

Some PDFs embed fonts without the information that says which letter each shape stands for. The text looks right in the PDF but comes out as other characters when it is copied, in any converter. Only text recognition (OCR) can read such pages. The tool shows a warning when it notices this.

Can I open the .docx file without Microsoft Word?

Yes. Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, WPS Office and the Word apps for phones all open .docx files.
