Compress PDF

Make scanned and photo-heavy PDFs smaller by rebuilding pages as compressed JPEG images in your browser.

One PDF up to 100 MB and 500 pages. It stays in your browser.

This version rebuilds pages as JPEG images. Text cannot be selected or searched in the result.

This works best for scanned or photo-heavy PDFs. It cannot preserve selectable text, forms, annotations or digital signatures. A text-only PDF may not become smaller.

Runs entirely in your browser. Your files and text are not uploaded.

How to use Compress PDF

  1. Step 1: Open a PDF

Choose a PDF from your device and check the file name, size and page count before continuing.

  2. Step 2: Choose a level

Balanced keeps more image detail; the smaller levels trade detail for a lower file size.

  3. Step 3: Compress and download

The tool rebuilds each page in this browser and offers the smaller copy only when it saves space.

What this compressor does

This version is intended for scanned PDFs, photographed documents and files with large pictures. It renders each page in your browser, saves that page as a compressed JPEG image, and creates a new PDF from those images. The original file is never uploaded.

That approach can reduce a large scan substantially, especially when it came from a phone scanner or contains full-page photos. It is less useful for a text-only PDF exported from Word, a website or a government portal. Those files are often already compact, and the rebuilt copy can be larger. When that happens, the tool keeps the original file available instead of presenting a larger download as an improvement.

Choose a compression level

Balanced is a sensible first try for ordinary scans. Smaller file lowers the image resolution and JPEG quality. Smallest file is for screen reading or an upload form with a tight size limit. It can make small print and stamps harder to read, so open the downloaded file and inspect every page before submitting it anywhere.

The tool does not promise a particular target size. The final size depends on the pictures, page count, colours and scanner settings in the original PDF.

Important changes in the result

The output is an image-only PDF. You cannot select, search or copy its text. Forms, links, bookmarks, annotations and embedded files are not preserved. A digital signature is no longer valid after any PDF is rebuilt. Password-protected PDFs are not supported by this tool.

For a text document that needs to remain searchable, use the original PDF or reduce image sizes before creating the PDF. Desktop software can sometimes make additional savings by changing fonts and internal PDF objects; that work is not available in this browser-only version.

Limitations

  • Pages are rebuilt as images, so selectable text, search, links, forms and bookmarks are removed.
  • Digital signatures and PDF/A conformance do not remain valid in the new file.
  • Text-only PDFs often save little or no space.
  • Password-protected PDFs are not supported.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded?

No. The PDF is opened and rebuilt in your browser, and the file is not sent to this site.

Why is my PDF not smaller?

A PDF that already uses efficient images or mostly contains text may not benefit from being rebuilt. The tool keeps the original when the result is larger.

Can I still copy text from the compressed PDF?

No. This version saves pages as images, so text is no longer selectable or searchable.

Convert PDF pages to JPG or PNG images at 72, 150 or 300 DPI. Pick the pages, then download one image or a ZIP of all of them. Nothing is uploaded.

Convert JPG, PNG and WebP images or screenshots into one PDF with a page per image. Reorder, rotate and choose the page size. Nothing is uploaded.

Reduce the file size of JPG, PNG and WebP images with adjustable quality. Your images never leave your device.
