Press “My IP” to detect

Pressing a button sends the IP address to ipwhois.io to look up its details. Nothing is sent before that, and this site does not store lookups.

This tool relies on an external service. See the details below before using it.

How to use IP Address Lookup

  1. Step 1: See your IP

Press My IP to show your public IP address and its details.

  2. Step 2: Look up any IP

  3. Step 3: Read the results

The approximate location, ISP, time zone and other details are shown in a table.

What is an IP address?

An IP address is a number that identifies a device on the internet, like a postal address for data. Most home connections have a public IP assigned by the internet service provider (ISP). Your devices on a home network share this public IP through a router.

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 addresses look like 192.168.1.1 — four numbers separated by dots, each from 0 to 255. There are about 4.3 billion possible IPv4 addresses, and most have been allocated. IPv6 addresses are longer, like 2001:0db8::1, and provide a much larger address space.

How accurate is geolocation?

IP geolocation is approximate. It can usually identify the city or region, but not the exact street address. It is based on databases maintained by regional internet registries and commercial providers. VPNs, proxies and mobile networks can make the location appear different from where you actually are.

Privacy

This tool uses the ipwhois.io service to look up IP details. Nothing is sent when the page opens. When you press My IP or Look Up, the request goes from your browser straight to ipwhois.io, which therefore sees your IP address and the address you looked up. This site does not receive or store lookups or their results. Like any website, our hosting provider's server logs record the IP addresses of visitors for security, as explained in the privacy policy.

Limitations

  • Geolocation is approximate — usually accurate to the city level, sometimes only to the region or country.
  • VPNs, proxies and corporate networks can obscure the real location.
  • The lookup uses the free ipwhois.io service, which allows a limited number of lookups per day for everyone using this site together. When that limit is reached, lookups stop working until it resets, which can take up to 24 hours.
  • Only one IP address can be looked up at a time.
  • This site does not store lookups or their results.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone find my exact address from my IP?

No. IP geolocation gives an approximate area — usually a city or region. It cannot pinpoint a street address. Only your ISP knows exactly which customer has a given IP at a given time.

Why does my IP show a different city?

Your ISP may route your traffic through a hub in another city, or you may be using a VPN, proxy or mobile network.

What is the difference between public and private IP?

Your public IP is the one the internet sees and is assigned by your ISP. Private IPs (like 192.168.x.x) are used inside your home or office network and are not visible to the outside world.

Can I look up a private IP address?

No. Private addresses like 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x and 172.16–31.x.x are not routable on the internet and have no geolocation data.

Is my IP address stored?

This site does not store lookups. The lookup itself is handled by ipwhois.io, whose privacy policy applies to the data it processes. Like any website, our hosting provider keeps short-lived server logs that include visitor IP addresses, as described in the privacy policy.
