There is no universal CGPA formula
Boards and universities set their own conversion policy. CBSE commonly states percentage as CGPA multiplied by 9.5 for the relevant scheme, but that multiplier is not a general rule for every institution. Other institutions use a proportional scale, a different multiplier, an offset or no conversion at all.
This calculator makes the selected formula visible and shows the working. For a proportional scale, it treats the maximum CGPA as equivalent to 100%. For a custom formula it uses percentage = (CGPA − offset) × multiplier. The reverse calculation rearranges that same formula.
Use official records where required
The result is a calculation, not an official grade conversion. Employers, admissions offices and foreign universities can require a transcript, conversion certificate or their own evaluation. Always follow the policy published by the institution that awarded the grade.
Limitations
- There is no single official CGPA-to-percentage formula for every board or university.
- CBSE’s 9.5 multiplier should only be used where the relevant CBSE scheme applies.
- Some institutions do not allow a conversion at all.
- Employers and universities may require an official transcript or conversion certificate.
Frequently asked questions
What is the CGPA to percentage formula?
It depends on your institution. This tool offers CBSE’s 9.5 multiplier, a proportional scale and a custom formula, but you must choose the policy your institution publishes.
How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
For a multiplier formula, divide the percentage by the multiplier. For a proportional 10-point scale, divide the percentage by 10. Check that this is the formula your institution uses.
Can I use this for an official application?
Use it as a quick estimate only. Submit the official transcript or conversion document if the receiving organisation asks for one.
